🤔 Commitment and layers of commitment, with a tad of the big picture …

Food for Thought on Commitment and the Big Picture [Transcript]

Good morning, it’s time for Monday Morning Reflections. So, I had a definition, or I heard a definition, of commitment this week that kind of blew my mind just a little bit, in a “Yeah, that’s right” kind of way.

And the definition was “commitment is committing to do something, no matter what.” you know, “to do something no matter what it takes.”

And, and I think about that, in in the terms of, I’ve been thinking about that in layers, there’s there’s layers of commitment that I’ve been thinking about.

So there’s these projects that I have that kind of are in the “in the margins” kind of projects. And then there are things that always come first. These are things that I am committed to, no matter what getting it done.

You know it can be as small – or it’s not a small…  you know right now we’re planning, Esther’s latest trip.  And I committed, that no matter what it would take, she would be in Wisconsin, on a specific day, no matter what.

And other things, the methodology of how that was going to happen, didn’t come together, the way we thought it was going to come together or hoped it would come together. But no matter what we’re making sure that she is in Wisconsin on that date.

And, and that was, you know, we will…  come hell or high water, we’ll make it happen. She will be there.

And that isn’t a commitment to the the activity. That is, for me, a commitment to the bigger picture, which is what is the best thing for Esther as a human being, as a 17 year old human being. And for her future.

There’s all kinds of dynamics that came into play, or comes into play. It’s not necessarily about this one date. And this one activity. It is about honoring what is critically important to who she is as an individual and the relationships that she has. And in respecting those and, and making it happen.

And not doing that –  the bigger picture of not doing that – is, is, the fallout from that is too big. It’s too huge.

And, and so it goes back to my bigger picture commitment to who I am as a parent, which is to do what I needed to do for – to help my children to be the best who they can be within who they are.

And, and this is, that’s the bigger picture commitment.

And, and as over the years, I think about this, and as over the years, I have continually sought resources and materials and methodologies and information to help make that happen.

My commitment hasn’t been to methodology. In fact, I advocate against being so committed to the methodology that it becomes harmful to your family or your child.

So it’s, it’s an interesting thing. So I read that and I think about that as my commitment, my choices for working from home, for finding a way.

“Finding a way” has been to those things that I committed to as an individual, to do whatever it takes, however it takes, to make it happen.

And so I think about some of the projects I have going on now. And is like my… I think my… Am I making… is it truly a priority?  — oh, there goes the smoke detector battery — The.. am I…

Is it truly a commitment? Have I truly made that commitment to do whatever it takes to make it happen?

And, and I’m continuing… like.. Do I continue to find ways to overcome, to look for another way? If I’m running into a roadblock? What’s another alternative? And finding that?

Anyway, that was kind of like my insight and thought for the week and I’m still kind of marinating in that, stewing on that. And I thought I’d share it with you to see you know whether or not you have any additional thoughts on that or how that resonates with you.

So, leave me a comment or direct message me. I’d love that.

I hope you have a really, really great week.  And, it’s rainy here which is why we’re indoors. But Have a great week. Talk to you later.
